Bruins Take On Tri City Tonight

March 19, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Chilliwack Bruins News Release

After a one year absence, the Chilliwack Bruins are back in the playoffs. After suffering first round exits at the hands of the Vancouver Giants in each of their previous two playoff appearances, the Bruins will take on the Western Conference champion Tri City Americans in a best of seven first round series that begins Friday and Saturday night in Kennewick Washington.

The Bruins won the season series between the two teams, taking three of the four head to head meetings. Chilliwack was the only BC Division team to earn a victory versus the Americans this season.

Offensively the Bruins, who set a new club record with 215 goals will continue to look for Ryan Howse to lead the way. Howse led the Western Conference with 47 goals but unlike previous versions of the Bruins, this year's squad ices a balanced attack that features five players who registered 20 or more goals during the regular season. Second year forward Kevin Sundher improved on a 19 goal rookie season with 25 goals. Rookie import forward Roman Horak, a New York Rangers draft pick scored 21 times including a team record five times while shorthanded. Jamie Crooks, picked up from the Saskatoon Blades early in the season finished the season with 21 goals, one more than second year forward Dylen McKinlay.

Chilliwack also received solid offensive output from their defense. 19 year old Brandon Manning finished the season with 13 goals and set a new Bruins record for most assists in a season by a defenceman with 41. Manning also led the team in plus minus finishing the season with a team record rating of +21. Veteran defenceman Jesse Craige was a powerplay specialist for the Bruins this season recording 32 of his 37 points and all seven of his goals on the man advantage.

While the Bruins have yet to name their game one starter in goal, Lucas Gore has held the starter's spot since the Bruins dealt Mark Friesen to the Swift Current Broncos in late November. Gore, who was named first star in each of the three Bruins wins vs the Americans this season set new team records for wins (20), shutouts (5) and save percentage (90.2). Backup Braden Gamble had a solid rookie season, picking up six wins including one shutout.
