Bruins in All-Star game tonight
February 14, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence Bruins forwards Andy Hilbert and Patrice Bergeron will represent the team in tonight's 2005 Dodge AHL All-Star Game in Manchester, New Hampshire. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 at 7:00 p.m. Hilbert is making the third All-Star appearance of his four-year career with PlanetUSA, and has 3-2-5 totals in his previous two appearances (2002, 2003). The 24-year-old native of Howell, Michigan won the Dodge Accuracy Shooting event at Sunday's All-Star Skills Competition, becoming the first player ever to hit all four targets on four shots. Hilbert leads the Bruins and is tied for fifth in AHL scoring with 57 points in 53 games. He is tied for third in the league with 27 goals and leads the league with 237 shots on goal.
Bergeron is slated to play for Canada in the All-Star Game, but is questionable due to the flu. The 19-year-old native of Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec ranks third on the Bruins with 16-29-45 totals in 42 games. He was the Most Valuable Player of the 2005 World Junior Championships, leading Canada to its first Gold Medal since 1997.
Bruin goaltender Hannu Toivonen had his franchise record shutout streak snapped at 13:04 of the third period on Saturday night in Springfield, a game won by the Bruins, 2-1 in a shootout. The 20-year-old native of Kalvola, Finland was 6:56 away from recording his fourth consecutive shutout. After blanking Hartford and Worcester on February 4 and 6, respectively, he turned aside all 32 Manchester shots he faced on February 11 in a 3-0 victory. Toivonen's shutout streak reached 237:27, coming within 12:24 of matching the AHL record held by Johnny Bower from the 1957-58 season. Toivonen is tied for the AHL lead with seven shutouts, while ranking fifth with a 2.02 GAA and being tied for fifth with 21 wins. He also ranks fifth with 1,073 saves and sixth with a .931 save percentage. Toivonen also ranks second in franchise history with nine shutouts in 77 games, one behind Tim Thomas.
The Bruins, who are 6-1-1-0 in their last eight games, return to action on Friday, February 18 at 7:05 p.m., when they host the Albany River Rats. They visit the Portland Pirates on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m., before returning home to host the Springfield Falcons on Sunday, February 20 at 4:05 p.m. Following Sunday's game, Bruin center Keith Aucoin and defenseman Kevin Dallman will sign autographs free of charge on the Dunkin' Donuts Center concourse behind Section 110.
