Binghamton Senators News Release


LAST WEEK: The Senators snapped a seven-game winless skid with a 7-0 win at Albany on Saturday afternoon. Binghamton earned a point with a shootout loss in Bridgeport the previous night. The Albany game wrapped up a streak of five consecutive games away from Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

FRIDAY, FEB. 11TH @ BRIDGEPORT (1-2 SOL): ANTON VOLCHENKOV scored the game's first goal only 85 seconds into the opening period. The next goal came more than 40 minutes later when ROB COLLINS scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season for Bridgeport. The Sound Tigers outscored the Sens 2-1 in the shootout with COLLINS and MORLANG scoring for Bridgeport. ANTOINE VERMETTE connected on his second shootout attempt in seven tries this season. Goalies BILLY THOMPSON and WADE DUBIELEWICZ combined to stop 56 of 58 shots in the game. Binghamton was scoreless on two power play while Bridgeport failed to capitalize on five power plays. The Senators will return to Bridgeport twice in April and also face the Sound Tigers this coming Thursday in their only home game of the month.

SATURDAY, FEB. 12TH @ ALBANY (7-0 W): The Senators snapped a franchise-record seven-game winless streak with their first shutout victory of the season on Saturday afternoon. RAY EMERY stopped all 19 shots he faced before being ejected following a large brawl midway through the third period. The Senators peppered Albany with 43 shots in the game. CHARLIE STEPHENS scored the game-winning goal 5:25 into the opening period. PAT KAVANAGH scored short-handed to give the B-Sens a 3-0 lead while DENIS HAMEL and BRIAN POTHIER helped Binghamton break out of a power-play slump with man advantage goals in the third period. JOSH LANGFELD, GREG WATSON and BRANDON BOCHENSKI also scored. A combined 209 penalty minutes were called in the game due largely to a brawl involving ARI AHONEN, BRETT CLOUTHIER, CAM JANSSEN and ROB SKRLAC of Albany and RAY EMERY, PAT KAVANAGH, BRIAN McGRATTAN and JAN PLATIL of Binghamton. All of the aforementioned players except BRIAN McGRATTAN were ejected following the melee.

THIS WEEK: The Senators will return from the all-star break on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. practice at the Arena. The Sens kick off three games in three nights against Bridgeport on Thursday. Trips to Syracuse and Manchester follow February's lone home game.

THURSDAY, FEB. 17TH vs. BRIDGEPORT (7:05 p.m.): Presidents Night – Anyone attending the game that can prove with identification they have the same name as a U.S. president will be entered to win a B-Sens prize pack that includes two tickets to a future game, a B-Sens fleece jacket and a baseball hat. Bridgeport will make their third trip of the season to the Arena on Thursday night. The game is Binghamton's only February home contest. Binghamton beat Bridgeport 3-2 on Thanksgiving Day and 5-1 on Dec. 17th. CHRIS KELLY (4g, 1a) and ANTOINE VERMETTE (2g, 3a) each have five points in four games against the Sound Tigers. Center KEVIN COLLEY has four points (2g, 2a) in four games to lead Bridgeport. RAY EMERY has a 2.02 goals-against average in thee games this season. His record is 2-1-0.

FRIDAY, FEB. 18TH @ SYRACUSE (7:30 p.m.): The Senators have earned 11 of a possible 12 points against Syracuse this season. The lone setback came in the last meeting on Jan. 30th that Syracuse won 3-2 in a shootout. JASON SPEZZA leads all scorers in the series with 11 points (3g, 8a) in six games. Winger JOE MOTZKO has six points (1g, 5a) in six games. RAY EMERY has a 3-0-1 record in four games with a 1.93 goals-against average. ANTOINE VERMETTE leads all skaters with a +8 rating in the series. The Sens next game in Syracuse – on April 15 – will be the final away game of the Senators regular season schedule.

SATURDAY, FEB. 19TH @ MANCHESTER (7:35 p.m.): Saturday's game will be the second of a two-game series against Manchester this season. Binghamton won the first meeting 4-1 at the Arena on Jan. 21st. The Senators trailed 1-0 at the first intermission in that game due to a goal by former B-Sen BRAD SMYTH. But the Sens converted on 3 of 7 power plays and got goals from BRANDON BOCHENSKI, JASON SPEZZA, ANTOINE VERMETTE and JOSH LANGFELD as Binghamton rallied for a victory. Manchester currently trails only Rochester in the AHL standings. The Monarchs have 76 points and the Amerks have 80.

SENS SNIPPETS: BRIAN McGRATTAN established a new franchise record for penalty minutes in a single season on Saturday. McGRATTAN picked up 22 more penalty minutes against Albany and now has 345 minutes this season – surpassing the record of 327 that he established last season...Thursday's game against Bridgeport will be one of only two Thursday games for Binghamton this season. The only other Thursday game was also against the Sound Tigers on Thanksgiving Day – a game that Binghamton won 3 – 2...It has been feast or famine for the Senators against the River Rats this season. The Senators have outscored Albany 21 to 4 in three wins. The Sens have been outscored 16 to 6 in their four losses...Saturday's win at Albany was Binghamton's first shutout this season...18 of the Senators remaining 26 games are against East Division opponents.

SENS AT THE ALL-STAR GAME: JASON SPEZZA won the individual InGlasCo Puck Control Relay for the second time in three seasons at Sunday night's AHL All-Star Skills Competition. Defenseman ANTON VOLCHENKOV and rookie winger BRANDON BOCHENSKI participated in the CCM Vector Hardest Shot competition. VOLCHENKOV'S best shot registered 92.9 miles per hour while BOCHENSKI hit 94.3 miles per hour. SPEZZA, VOLCHENKOV, BOCHENSKI and BRIAN POTHIER will play in tonight's all-star game that will be broadcast across the United States on ESPN2 beginning at 7 p.m.
