Brown, Timely Offense Help Thunder to 3-0 Win

Wichita, KS (February 9th) - David Brown stopped all 24 shots he faced helping Wichita (20-21-4) blank the Missouri Mavericks (28-13-2) on Sunday afternoon by the final of 3-0. The Thunder scored twice less than a minute apart midway through the first period and got a late tally to seal its first shutout of the season. Matt Summers, Jon Madden and Mike Wilson each recorded goals to seal Wichita's second-straight Independence Cup win and improving to 6-3-0 in the season-series.
Wichita and Missouri came out with an edge in the early going of the contest. The two teams got into pushing matches after the whistle, which helped set the tone. The first goal came off a face-off as RG Flath won the puck back. Mike Wilson fired a wrist shot onto Shane Owen, but he couldn't control the rebound. Summers swung through traffic and scored at 10:23 to make it 1-0. 39 seconds later, Madden intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, skated back up ice, took a shot and one-timed his own rebound past the Missouri netminder to increase the lead to 2-0. Wichita kept up the pressure and out-shot the Mavericks 15-5 in the first 20 minutes.
Missouri began the second period shorthanded as Trevor Kell was in the sin bin for holding. Neither team was able to find the back of the net with the man advantage despite having two of the top three power play units in the league. Tempers continued to flare with post-whistle scrums as Colt King and Garrett Gruenke battled against one another all night long.
Wichita would tack on another late in the third despite being out-shot 11-4 in the final frame. The Mavericks pulled Owen twice, once when Dustin Donaghy was sent off for slashing at 14:22 and later in the period with less than two minutes to go. Mike Wilson picked off a pass at the red line without any defenders in sight and he found an empty-net at 18:31 to close out the scoring.
Wichita puts an end to the Mavericks' three-game winning streak and stops its brief skid at two losses. Summers records his eighth of the season and his first since his game-winning goal in overtime at Missouri on January 18th. Mike Wilson collects two points (1g, 1a) and moves alone into sixth place in the defensive scoring race with 29 points. Brown grabs his ninth career shutout, stopping all 24 shots. Owen suffers his 10th loss of the year, stopping 22 of 24 shots.
Wichita went 0-for-2 on the power play. Missouri was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Wichita will make its first-ever trip to Canada to take on the Brampton Beast for a three-game set starting next Friday night. The Thunder return home on Friday, February 21st against the Allen Americans at 7:05 p.m.
