Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers blasted four home runs on Wednesday night, on their way to a 9-1 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals in the series opener at Bright House Field.
Aaron Brown belted two solo shots and finished 3-for-3, becoming the first Threshers player with a multi-homer game since JP Crawford on August 24, 2014.
Clearwater's four homers as a team were the most for the Threshers in any game this season. Carlos Tocci and Rhys Hoskins also went yard as Clearwater launched three long balls off Cardinals starter Nick Petree (1-2) in the fifth inning.
The Threshers (15-5) came out swinging against Petree in the first. After Malquin Canelo lined out to second to start the inning, Clearwater collected five consecutive singles.
Hoskins knocked home Tocci with a liner to center for the game's first run, and Brown would bring home Andrew Pullin with a single through the left side to make it 2-0.
The lone run for the Cardinals (13-7) came in the second. A pair of one-out hits against Matt Imhof culminated in a run when a wild pitch permitted CJ McElroy Jr. to score from third, cutting the Clearwater lead to 2-1.
Imhof (4-3) earned the win after limiting Palm Beach to a run on six hits and three walks in his five innings.
The Threshers got that run back quickly. Tocci singled to start the home half of the third, moved to second on a ground ball, and stole third base. Hoskins brought him home with a sac fly to left, as Tocci scored just ahead of the throw from Collin Radack.
An inning later, Brown belted his first of two home runs - a leadoff blast off the batters eye in center, giving Clearwater the 4-1 lead.
Tocci led off the fifth with another solo shot, his first in a Threshers uniform. He pulled a payoff pitch over the wall in left for his third homer combined between Lakewood and Clearwater, a new career-high.
With one out, Hoskins followed suit. His solo jack sailed out to left, giving him four home runs in a Threshers uniform and bumping the lead to 6-1. Brown capped the rally by tagging Petree for his second shot of the night, this time out to right field.
After gaining a comfortable advantage, the Threshers bullpen locked it down the rest of the way, allowing just three baserunners in the final four innings. Alexis Rivero made his high-A debut in the ninth, allowing a walk but striking out two in a scoreless final frame.
The Threshers will battle Palm Beach for game two of the series at 7 p.m. on Thirsty Thursday and Ladies Night at Bright House Field. David Whitehead (6-7) takes the hill against Daniel Poncedeleon (2-0), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
