Broncos Opportunistic in Win over Red Deer

SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (6-13-1-2) bounced back from a disappointing performance against Regina last weekend with a 6-4 win over the Red Deer Rebels (7-14-0-3) Tuesday night.
The Broncos opened the scoring 3:48 into the game when Justin Svenson scored his first career goal. Brecon Wood's shot was blocked off the rush and came to Svenson who fired it through the five hole of Byron Fancy to open the scoring.
The Broncos were given a power play 1:29 later and took advantage early in the power play. After the Rebels turned the puck over in the skates of Fancy, a goal mouth scramble ensued.
Wood and Hayden Ostir chopped at the loose puck and Wood got the last touch for his fifth of the year to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead just 11 seconds into the power play.
After the goal, play shifted into the Broncos end as the Rebels gained momentum. The Broncos had a tough time clearing the zone and the Rebels took advantage.
Christoffer Sedoff took a shot from the point that was deflected by Jaxsen Weibe to cut the Broncos lead in half.
Just 23 seconds later, Dawson Barteaux's shot from the right point eluded Isaac Poulter to tie the game up through 20 minutes.
The second period was a little less one sided and eventually the Broncos regained the lead for good. After Hendrik De Klerk intercepted a pass at his own blue line, he started the rush the other way.
He sent the puck to Svenson on the right side who then dropped it for Cohner Saleski in the right circle, and Saleski's shot beat Fancy on the glove side for his first career WHL goal to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead heading into the third.
Early in the third Kaleb Bulych was called for cross checking, but it was the Broncos taking advantage. The puck was turned over at the Swift Current blue line and Jaxan Kaluski was off to the races.
Kaluski came in all alone and beat Fancy on the blocker side for a shorthanded goal, pushing the Broncos lead to 4-2.
Three minutes later, De Klerk showed great patience after taking a cross-ice pass from Sergei Alkhimov, out waiting Fancy before sliding the puck in front to Eric Houk who shoveled home his first goal of the year to make it 5-2.
The Rebels briefly changed goalies as Swift Current native Chase Coward was in net for 59 seconds before Fancy went back in.
The Rebels got a power-play goal at the 11:26 mark when Sedoff jumped on a rebound in the slot, but Wood hit the empty net to push the lead to 6-3 before the Rebels scored another power-play goal with just nine seconds left to make the final score 6-4.
The Broncos now get set for perhaps their biggest test of the season as they begin a home-and-home set with the WHL's top team, the Prince Albert Raiders (16-5-3-1) on the road Friday night.
