Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Swift Current, SK.: The Swift Current Broncos downed the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-4 in a shootout. The Oil Kings earned a hard fought point on the road by battling back from four different Swift Current leads, with four different goal scorers. Broncos goalie Morgan Clark shut Edmonton out in the shootout and Justin Dowling scored the only goal on the Oil Kings netminder Torrie Jung.
"I thought we a lot of guys contribute tonight," said Oil Kings Head Coach Steve Pleau. "We rolled all four lines and played all six defensemen while they relied on their top two lines. It showed as we had a strong third period but we just couldn't score on some of our chances and grab hold of this one."
Swift Current scored first on the power play when a point shot went off traffic in front of Jung and right to Brad Hoban who put it in. Edmonton got the goal back 26 seconds later in almost the same fashion. Mark Pysyk fired a point shot that was blocked, but the puck went right to TJ Foster who scored his first of the year. Pysyk and Michael St. Croix grabbed assists and extend their point streaks to five and seven games respectively.
The Broncos started the second period with a man advantage and scored eight seconds in. Dowling was left all alone as Swift Current broke in and he scored on a shocked Oil Kings team. The lead was 2-1 Broncos, but that only lasted three and a half minutes. St. Croix picked up his second assist of the game setting up Brett Breitkreuz for his eighth goal of the year. Swift Current scored their third power play goal with less than a second to go in the period. Derek Claffey stunned the Oil Kings as he tapped one in uncontested at the side of the net after a feed from Cody Eakin.
Brent Raedeke pulled the Oil Kings even again early in the third period when he ripped a bullet wrist shot past Clark. The power play goal was the 19 year olds 11th of the season. Eakin got the Broncos the lead back when he scored his WHL leading 22nd goal and picked up his fourth point of the night. The Oil Kings tied it up again at 4-4 when Tomas Vincour scored his team leading 12th goal of the season, and that sent this game to overtime. Extra time solved nothing and the Broncos won it in the shootout when Clark stopped Vincour, Breitkreuz and Robin Soudek, while Dowling scored five hole on Jung.
The Oil Kings (8-11-2-4) drop to 1-4 in the shootout and lose ground on the Broncos (12-10-0-2) in the Eastern Division standings. The Oil Kings sit 10th in the East with 22 points while the Broncos are sixth with 26 points.
The Oil Kings wrap up a seven game road trip on Tuesday, November 17th when they will meet the Regina Pats for the first time this season. The Oil Kings return home Friday, November 20th for their only game of the year versus the Spokane Chiefs. The Oil Kings will be wearing a Special Jersey that will be auctioned off at the game to raise money to support the battle against prostate cancer.
