Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (Month day, Year) - The Can-Am League announced on Monday that Brockton Rox pitcher Freddy Flores was named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 6th - July 12th.
On July 6th, Flores pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout in Brockton's 10-0 win over the Worcester Tornadoes. He struck out six and walked just one batter. Flores did not allow a hit out of the infield until there were two outs in the final inning of play. The seven-inning game was the second of a double header. Flores responded to the building drama in the late innings, striking out three of the last six men he faced.
At 35 years old, Flores has returned to the diamond as a player after spending six seasons as the head softball coach for the Western New Mexico University Mustangs (2002 - 2007). Prior to his tenure in the coaching ranks, Flores played four seasons of professional baseball in the independent leagues from 1997 - 2000.
Flores was a three-time Coach of the Year with Western New Mexico and led the Mustangs to conference championships in 2002 and 2003 and a conference tournament championship in 2007.
In 2008, Flores sought a return to the baseball diamond as a player, seven years removed from his last professional game. He caught the attention of former Atlantic City Surf Manager and MLB All-Star Cecil Fielder at a tryout camp, and spent most of the 2008 season as a volunteer coach with the Surf. Flores played in two games with Atlantic City in 2008, once as an outfielder, and once as a starting pitcher. His start on August 30, 2008 against the New Jersey Jackals was his first professional game since August 29, 2000. He picked up a win, pitching five innings and allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts.
A rare blend of talents, Flores has started two games at shortstop for the Rox and appeared in five games as a pitcher.
