Worcester Tornadoes News Release
AUGUSTA, NJ--- Chris Farley's fourth start of the season in a Worcester uniform was his best. He struck out seven, matching a season high, en route to a Worcester 7-6 win that improved the starters record to 1-1.
Worcester matched the third game of the series with three runs to kick things off in the top of the first. It was a lead off double from Vinny Pennell, and a pair of doubles from Carlos Sosa and Alex Trezza that did the damage. Sussex would claw back to within one, scoring a run on a Chris Brown single, and another on a fielding error by Garrett Olson at shortstop in the bottom half of the third.
The Tornadoes got the bats moving in the fifth and sixth, netting four runs, two of which driven in by the hot-swinging Sosa. Carlos swatted his fifth home run of the season in the fifth, and singled in the sixth. He was a triple short of the cycle.
Sussex starter Justin Knoff received the loss throwing six innings. He came into the game second in the league in strikeouts (38) but was only able to sit down four Tornadoes on this night. Jamie Douglas and newcomer Edward Campusano hurled in relief; Campusano signed after last season's save leader Matt Petrusek was released earlier in the day.
Things got hairy for Worcester in the eighth when Farley and reliever Eddie Pena walked five men, including four in a row, allowing four to score. All runs were earned, there was only one hit in the inning.
Interim closer Santiago Ramirez (2) shut the door in the ninth, pitching to three batsmen and getting all of them to pop out on the infield.
July 15th begins a four game home stand for Worcester against the Jackals of New Jersey, Worcester will go with LHP Ryan Lobban (4-3) while Jersey's starter is TBA. July 15th marks the second Townie night of 2009, half price tickets if you live or work in Leominster or Fitchburg.
