WEST HAVEN, CT- Brockton starter LHP Rolando Viera (1-0) scattered four hits and struck out six in 6.0 innings to lift the Rox over the New Haven County Cutters, 6-1, Thursday night in the Cutters' 2007 home opener at Historic Yale Field.
Second baseman Eugene Julien and left fielder Jeremy Coronado each drove in two runs with extra base hits and first baseman Francisco Lebron homered in the Rox victory.
RHP Jarrett Stawarz (0-2) started for the Cutters and allowed five earned runs on six hits in 5.1 innings and took the loss.
Cutters' starter LHP Rolando Valles was effective again in a relief appearance, yielding just two hits and one walk in 2.2 innings.
Designated hitter Matt Hackney collected two of the Cutters four hits and drove in the team's lone run with a ninth inning single.
Game two of the three-game series is set for Friday night. Game time is 7:05 pm.
LHP Ryan Bonesio (0-0, 1.93 ERA) will take his turn for the Cutters as RHP John Kelly (0-0, 5.40 ERA) will start for the Rox.
