Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER, MA--- The day got out to a promising start in the top of the second when Carlos Sosa launched his fourth home run of the season over the fence in right field to take the 1-0 lead in game one. Brockton would outscore the Tornadoes fourteen to one over the following twelve and a half innings. The Rox came from behind in game one, 4-2, and dominated game two 10-0. In game one, after the Sosa jack, Worcester scored again in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Colabello. The Rox got one back in the bottom of the third and then went ahead in the fifth when center fielder Chris Valencia tripled down the left field line scoring Chris Grossman and Dominic Ramos. That was all the Rox would need. Zack Zuercher (1-4) filed away the first complete game for the Tornadoes, albeit in just six innings of work, but received the loss. Bryan Morse (1-0) compiled his first win and Jerry Dunn racked up his fifth save.
Game two belonged to 35-year-old right-hander Freddy Flores. In his second spot start in 2009, the former Western New Mexico softball coach only allowed three Tornadoes to reach base, a walk and two hits, in the seven inning complete game shut out. The Rox offense came from an unexpected source in game two; back-up catcher Jon Gossard. Jon's first hit of the season yielded two RBI's as did his second. Melvin Falu and Chris Valencia both chipped in with a pair of runs driven in as well.
Josef Frias (1-1) was saddled with his first loss allowing eight earned in four and a third innings. Albert Ayala and PJ Thomas followed him; seven team walks did not help Worcester's cause.
Worcester and Brockton will lock horns for another pair of tilts Tuesday as the second part of a home and home twin double header from Hanover Insurance Park. Matt Weagle and Nick Conway are slated to start; Brockton's starters are to be announced. First pitch of game one will be at 6:05 on WTAG, the second game will begin approximately a half hour after the conclusion of game one.
Tonight is Oxford Night at Hanover Insurance Park. Half price tickets if you live or work in Oxford, Massachusetts. Additionally, Wednesday's game in Brockton will be the first Tornadoes Road Trip of 2009, sponsored by the Shaw's Booster Club. Call the Tornadoes Box Office or visit the Hanover Insurance Fan Assistance booth for more information on how to invade Campanelli Stadium on the 8th!
