Brockton Rox News Release

Newark, N.J. - After waiting out the rain for more than two hours, the Brockton Rox (13-8) pounded out a season high 17 runs on 20 hits to beat the Newark Bears (13-8) 17-14 at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Both starting pitchers struggled on Friday night, but it was Jesse Estrada (1-2) who took the loss after getting knocked around for eleven runs on twelve hits in four and 2/3 innings.

Brockton did almost half of their damage in the fifth inning alone, as the Rox brought ten men to the plate, driving in seven runs on five hits. A three run homer from Mike Torres capped off the scoring barrage, making the score 12-4 at the half way point.

Jorge Jimenez and Torres each knocked in four runs in the ballgame, while Melvin Falu, Chris Valencia and Dominic Ramos each crossed home three times for Brockton.

Rox reliever Dustin Birosak (2-0) entered the game in the fourth inning after starter Robert Bono struggled with his command in the early going, walking five and allowing four runs (two earned) in the first three frames. The southpaw collected the win in his second straight outing, allowing only a solo home run to Paddy Matera in three solid innings of work.

Just when the game seemed all but over, the Bears offense roared into gear in the seventh inning, batting around to score six runs and cutting the lead from ten down to four. Colin Lynch (1.0 IP, 6 R, 5 H) was tagged for solo home runs by Daryle Ward and Burt Reynolds along with a two-run triple from Juan Martinez.

Newark never took their foot off the gas, plating ten runs in the final four frames, but the Rox hung on to claim victory with Travis Hughes mercifully closing the door in the ninth.

The series continues with game two Saturday night in Newark with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Lefty Mark Rosen will take the ball in search of his first win of the season.
