Jimenez drives in four , Falu three in big victory, spoiling Newark's opener of home stand

June 17, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) - Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, N.J. - Jorge Jimenez had two hits, a two-run single and a two-run homer, and Melvin Falu had three hits, including a two-run homer, drove in three and scored three runs, leading the Brockton Rox to a 17-14 victory over the Newark Bears Friday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The victory pushed the Rox (13-8) dead even with the Bears (13-8) in the Can-Am League standings. The start of the game was delayed for two hours due to the severe thunderstorm that blanketed the area.

Jimenez, who had a three-homer game in a Brockton win over the Bears earlier this week, continued his assault on Bears' pitching with his four RBI.

Brockton put the game away with a seven-run fifth inning, all against Bears' starter and loser Jesse Estrada (1-2). Mike Torres had the big hit in the inning, a three-run homer. Former Newark Bear Shawn Williams had a two-run double in the rally, giving the Rox a 12-4 lead.

The Bears, who had 16 hits of their own, then mounted a comeback, scoring six runs in the home seventh inning, with Brandon Watson driving in a run, newcomer Juan Martinez driving in two with a triple and Daryle Ward and Burt Reynolds hitting solo homers, cutting the lead to 15-11. The Bears scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to draw to within 17-14, but could not get any closer.

Watson had four hits and scored three runs to lead Newark. Martinez, signed earlier in the day, had a double and triple in his Bears' debut and drove in three runs. Paddy Matera continued his hot hitting with three hits, including a solo homer, and scored three times.

Dustin Birosak pitched three innings, allowing just one run, to earn the victory in relief of starter Robert Bono.

The Bears and Rox return to action Saturday at 6:35 p.m. on Fireworks Night. Jacob Wild is slated to take the start for the Bears.
