Bridgeport Sound Tigers Fall In Home Opener

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost their 2002-03, regular-season, home opener 4-2 to the Norfolk Admirals Saturday. Prior to the game, the team raised its 2001-02 East Division Championship, Regular Season Championship and Eastern Conference Playoff Championship banners to the Arena at Harbor Yard rafters.

Norfolk built a 2-0 lead by the first intermission on Brett McLean's first goal of the year on an assist from Steve McCarthy at 5:31 and Burke Henry's first at 9:45 on an assist from Mikhail Yakubov.

The Sound Tigers cut the lead in half to 2-1 on Konstantin Kalmikov's first goal with the team at 15:49 of the second period with Daniel Tetrault and Justin Mapletoft notching the assists. They tied the game at 2-2 on Jeff Hamilton's first goal with the team, a four-on-three power-play tally, 2:42 into the third period with Eric Manlow earning the lone assist. The points were the third for both Hamilton and Manlow, who had two assists and two goals respectively in last night's 5-4 overtime loss to the Binghamton Senators, this weekend.

Norfolk took the lead for good with 13:27 to play on Mike Peluso's second goal of the season on an assist from Jeff Helperl and iced the win on Igor Radulov's second of the year with 4:59 left in the game on assists from McLean and Marty Wilford.

Norfolk Goaltender Michael Leighton made 36 saves to earn the first start of the game, McLean's two-point effort was good for number two honors, and Hamilton was the number three star.

The Sound Tigers were 1 for 10 on the power play, 7 for 7 on the penalty kill and outshot Norfolk 38-27.

The Sound Tigers will host the St. John's Maple Leafs this Wednesday, October 16th at 7:05 p.m. and the Hartford Wolf*Pack next Friday, October 18th at 7:35 p.m. They will visit the Springfield Falcons next Saturday, October 19th at 7:35 p.m. All games will be broadcast on "The ZONE" FOX Sports Radio 1300 and the Internet at www.soundtigers.com. "The Sound Tigers Report" will also air this Tuesday at 7 p.m. on "The ZONE" live from Amber Jacks in Norwalk. In addition, Sound Tigers' road games will be broadcast on WSTC/WNLK 1400/1350.
