Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Central Islip, NY) - The Bridgeport Bluefish were defeated by the Long Island Ducks 6-5 on Wednesday evening at Bethpage Ballpark.

Bridgeport got on the scoreboard first when with two outs in the top of the second inning, center fielder James Simmons hit a two-run double to give the 'Fish a 2-0 lead. That lead would hold through the middle of the sixth inning when play would be halted by a 27-minute rain relay. Once play resumed in the bottom of the sixth inning, Long Island cut the lead in half when Lew Ford came around to score on a throwing error. Bridgeport would restore their two-run lead in the top of the seventh inning off of third baseman Ramon Castro's RBI double.

That would end D.J. Mitchell's night as the Bluefish starter went six innings and allowed one unearned run off three hits and struck out five batters. But Bridgeport relievers Ryan Harvey (0-1) and Kyle McMillen would not record an out in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the pair combined to give up five runs off three hits and five walks. Jaye Chapman came in to relieve McMillen with the bases loaded and no outs and struck out three straight batters to keep the score at 6-3 in favor of Long Island. Bridgeport scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning as catcher Luis Rodriguez and second baseman Juan Martinez would score when James Simmons reached on Long Island shortstop Dan Lyons's throwing error, bringing the score to 6-5 Long Island but that would be the closest Bridgeport would come to tying the game.

Josh Lansford (4-2) earned the win for Long Island in relief, giving up a run in an inning pitched after Jared Lansford started for Long Island and allowed two runs off three hits in six innings pitched. Jon Meloan picked up his ninth save of the season for Long Island after pitching a scoreless ninth inning and Harvey picked up the loss in relief for Bridgeport.

Bridgeport will face Long Island for series finale of the five game series on Thursday evening, with first pitch at 7:05pm. The 'Fish return to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, July 7th to begin a three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
