CHARLOTTE, NC - Forward Brian Brown scored a brace on Wednesday night to lift the Charlotte Independence (11-6-6) over Orlando City B (8-8-7) 4-0 at Ramblewood Stadium. The win improved Charlotte's unbeaten record to six matches and moved the club up to fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. In addition, the 11 wins set a new franchise high.
Patrick Slogic opened the scoring after just four minutes, turning in Lewis Hilton's corner. He then became the provider two minutes later, as his through ball played in Brown to the touchline before the forward's shot from a tight angle deflected in off Orlando City goalkeeper Mark Ridgers.
"There's a part of me that wishes we didn't have a week off and that we had a game tomorrow," said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "The four game road swing was positive in not only that we got results but we played well and we've been able to translate that coming home."
Charlotte, who secured back-to-back clean sheets for the third time this season, preserved their 2-0 advantage when Bilal Duckett hustled to clear the ball off the line eight minutes in, earning the Wells Fargo Save of the Game.
"It was exciting to get off to a good start for myself," said Slogic. "I was happy to get a goal early on and take some of the pressure off us, which opens up our play."
Brown nearly made it a dream half for the Independence, but he poked Joel Johnson's clever pass wide of the post, keeping the score 2-0 in favor of Charlotte after one.
The Independence continued to threaten the Lions' goal in the second, as Caleb Calvert drew a save in the 57th minute. But it was Enzo Martinez who pushed the hosts ahead 3-0 when he fired into the far corner for his seventh goal of the season upon receiving the ball in an open position down the left side.
Brown's second of the night - converting a David Estrada cross from close range - ensured Charlotte recorded their largest margin of victory this season.
The Independence improved to 39 points with seven games remaining, and looks to overtake Richmond and Charleston in the standings, whose match on Wednesday night was postponed due to severe weather. The Independence travels to Charleston on Aug. 27 before hosting FC Cincinnati at Ramblewood to
