Norfolk Tides News Release
Radhames Liz struck out ten over seven strong innings, but the Richmond Braves plated a late run to edge the Tides 2-1 Thursday afternoon from Harbor Park.
Liz was dominant in his fourth outing of the season, as he allowed just three hits and two walks in seven innings of work. The 24-year-old struck out five of the first seven batters he faced, and his ten punchouts in the outing set a Tides season-high. Liz, who routinely touched 96 mph on his fastball, faced just five batters over the minimum and threw 71 of his 102 pitches for strikes.
After cruising through the first five innings, Liz was touched up for the only run of his outing in the sixth. Josh Anderson led off with a double to right field, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brent Lillibridge. Brandon Jones followed with a foul fly into left field, and Anderson beat Chris Roberson's throw to the plate to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.
Richmond starter Jo-Jo Reyes (1-0) was equally impressive, as he allowed one run on five hits in seven innings of work. Reyes held Norfolk scoreless through six frames before back-to-back doubles by Oscar Salazar and Roberson leading off the 7th inning knotted the score at 1-1. The run in the 7th was the first allowed by Reyes in four starts this season, and he now sports a 0.43 ERA in 21.0 innings pitched.
The Braves took the lead in the 8th off of Tides reliever Alberto Castillo (1-1). Anderson started the inning with a one-out double, and moved to third on a double by Lillibridge. Jones then hit a high-chopper to first base that scored Anderson and gave the Braves a 2-1 lead.
Jeff Ridgway worked around a one-out single in the 9th to earn his first save of the season.
Roberson had three hits to lead the Tides, who were playing their second game in a 12-hour span after a 14-inning marathon Wednesday night.
Next up for Norfolk is a six-game road trip through Richmond and Charlotte starting Friday. Hayden Penn (1-1, 4.88) is set to take the mound against the Braves on Friday night, while Richmond is scheduled to counter with a rehabbing Mike Hampton. First pitch from The Diamond is set for 7:00.
