Richmond, VA - The Richmond Braves rallied for a wild 6-5 win in 11 innings over the Norfolk Tides Saturday at The Diamond. The Braves came from behind in the ninth and 10th innings before finally earning their fourth straight win on a one-out RBI single by Wes Timmons in the 11th. The two clubs played 11 innings for the second straight night.
The Braves took advantage of a walk and a throwing error to take a 2-0 lead on an RBI double by Barbaro Canizares in the fourth. The Tides Eli Whiteside smashed a home run in the fifth to cut the Richmond lead to 2-1. In the seventh the Tides tied the game on a controversial sacrifice fly by Brandon Fahey that led to the ejection of both managers and grabbed a 3-2 lead on a run-scoring double by J.R. House. The Tides added one in the ninth when Mike Cervenak chased a run home with a single to make it 4-2. Richmond scrapped back in the last of the ninth on a pair of two-out run scoring singles by Barbaro Canizares and Iker Franco to force extra-innings. In the 10th the Tides again went in front on an RBI fielder's choice by Cesar Crespo. The Braves again rallied to tie on a two-out RBI single by Bill McCarthy. In the 11th a throwing error opened the door for Richmond and Timmons walk-off single chased Doug Clark home with the winning run.
Buddy Hernandez picked up the win. Nick McCurdy took the loss. Canizares had four of Richmond's 14 hits. Cervenak had two hits for the Tides.
The two clubs meet again Sunday at The Diamond at 2 PM. It is Ukrop's Hat Day. The first 3,000 fans will receive the Braves new Sunday hat free. Jonathan Johnson will pitch for Richmond.
The Braves benefit auction of their game worn and autographed Virginia Tech hats has generated more than $3,300 in bids to aid the Hokie Sprit Memorial Fund. The auction runs through May 3. For more information please call 359-4444 or visit www.rbraves.com.
