Mississippi Braves News Release
Both starters in tonight's game came into the game having allowed only one run in each of their last two starts. Neither could match those efforts, but the Braves' James Parr won the battle of the starters. Normally dominant Jack Egbert gave up five runs in the first three innings and was pulled from the game. Parr left after 5.2 innings with a 5-2 lead. Though the Braves won the battle of the starters, the Barons won the battle of the bullpen as Birmingham came from behind to take game five and the series, 6-5.
The M-Braves jumped all over Birmingham's Jack Egbert as they batted around in the bottom of the first. J.C. Holt led off with a bloop-single to left and Carl Loadenthal reached on a bunt single to third. Third baseman Chris Kelly fielded Loadenthal's bunt and threw the ball down the right field line. Holt came in to score on the error and Loadenthal advanced to second. Diory Hernandez then reached on a bunt single that moved Loadenthal to third. Mark Jurich ripped a double, his 31st of the year, down the right field line scoring Loadenthal and moving Hernandez to third. Clint Sammons walked to load the bases and Matt Young shot a single through the right side scoring Hernandez with the Braves fourth run. After one, Mississippi led, 4-0.
The Barons got on the board in the second. Cory Aldridge led off with a double and Kelly's two-out double to right-center brought him home. In the middle of inning number two, the Braves were up, 4-1.
The Braves got that run back in the third. Sammons ripped a single back up the middle and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Sammons came in to score on a double to right by Young to push the Braves lead to 5-1.
Birmingham inched closer in the sixth when Chris Getz singled and scored on a double by Aldridge. After five-and-a-half, the Braves led, 5-2.
The Barons came from behind to take the lead in the eighth. Victor Mercedes, Chris Getz, and Shawn Garrett started the inning with consecutive singles to load the bases. Aldridge drew a walk to force home Mercedes and David Cook walked bringing home Getz. Ricardo Nanita singled home Garrett and Aldridge scored on a sac-fly by Cole Armstrong. In the middle of the eighth, Birmingham led 6-5.
James Parr gave up two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings and left the game with a 5-2 lead. Michael Nix gave up three runs in an inning and a third while Nelson Payano walked the only two batters he faced on eight straight pitches to earn his first AA loss. Sung Ki Jung threw two scoreless for Mississippi.
Jack Egbert had his second-shortest outing of the year as he left after only three innings. Egbert gave up five runs on seven hits in his three innings of work and left the game trailing 5-1. Carlos Torres threw two scoreless as did Adam Russell. Russell improved to 9-10 on the season. John Wesley threw one scoreless inning and Oneli Perez threw a scoreless ninth to earn his 16th save of the year.
The Braves welcome the Mobile BayBears to town Thursday night for the first game of a five-game series at Trustmark Park. Mississippi will send righty Brad Nelson to the hill in search of his fifth win while the BayBears will counter with righty Brooks Brown who's also going for fifth win. Thursday night is Thirsty Thursday at Trustmark Park when all 16 oz. fountain drinks and draft beer will be $1.
