Braves clinch Appalachian League East Division with 13-1 victory

DANVILLE – The D-Braves (40-25) offense propelled the team to the Appalachian League East Division title Sunday afternoon at Legion Field.

One night after scoring 11 runs against the Johnson City Cardinals' (33-34) pitching staff, Danville put 13 runs on the board, scoring in every inning except the first and the fourth.

Left fielder Mark Jurich and third baseman Van Pope both had three hits in the game for the Braves, who had 16 hits as a team. Pope was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle and had six RBI.

Danville starter Luis Atilano picked up the win for the Braves to improve to 5-1 on the season. Justin Brown was charged with the loss to drop to 2-4.

The Braves and Cardinals meet again tomorrow at 7 p.m. on Fan Appreciation Night at Legion Field.

BRAVES BEAT: The Braves will host the first game of the Appalachian League Championship Series against the West Division Champion Greeneville Astros Tuesday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. Games two and three will be played at Pioneer Park in Greeneville, Tenn....The Braves last won the East Division in 2000, losing to Elizabethton 2-0 in the best-of-three Championship Series...The Danville Braves Booster Club presented team awards on the field prior to Sunday's game...Catcher Cole Armstrong won the award for Highest Batting Average, Kelvin Villa won Lowest ERA, Carl Loadenthal won Team MVP, and Van Pope won the Team Spirit Award and was voted the Fan Favorite.
