Rome, GA- The Rome Braves got back to business at home Tuesday night with a big win over the Augusta Greenjackets 7-0 in front of 2,914 fans. The team lit up the Greenjacket's pitching for 11 hits and seven runs. Rome got on the board in the third inning as Matt Young tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Rozema. Rome added three more runs in the fifth highlighted by an RBI single from Mike Rozema and a run scoring triple by Van Pope widening the lead to 4-0. The Braves added three additional runs in the sixth inning to close out the scoring. Leading the way for the Braves offensively with three RBI was Mike Rozema, followed by Clint Sammons with two and Van Pope with one.
While the offense was hot the pitching was even hotter. Rome's starter Luis Atilano (2-3) pitched eight strong shutout innings giving up just one hit picking up the win. Augusta's starter Osiris Matos (0-3) took the loss.
The Braves take on the Greenjackets again tomorrow at 1pm in game two of a four game series. Atlanta Braves pitcher Kevin Gryboski is scheduled to start for the Rome Braves in a Major League Baseball rehab assignment. For ticket information call the Braves ticket hotline at 706-378-5144.
