Braves blank Barons again

Coming into this six-game set at Trustmark Park, the Birmingham Barons had only been shutout once all year. The M-Braves made it three times on the season and twice in this series as they defeated Birmingham 4-0 Friday night.

For the seventh straight game, the M-Braves got on the board first. This time, they put up two runs in the home-half of the first. Martin Prado, in the second game of his rehab assignment, got the inning started with a walk. Mark Kotsay, in the fourth game of his rehab, followed with an opposite-field double down the left field line. Prado scored on a 4-3 groundout by Reid Gorecki and Kotsay scored on a double by Jordan Schafer.

The M-Braves added another run in the fifth when JC Holt scored from first on an error by Micah Schnurstein. Martin Prado hit a hard grounder to first that was misplayed and went into foul territory up the first base line. Right fielder Stefan Gartrell collected the ball and threw to second and Holt never stopped rounding third. He beat the throw from second with the Braves third run.

Van Pope doubled home Jordan Schafer in the sixth to push Mississippi's lead to 4-0.

Kris Medlen struck out eight while giving the Braves six shutout innings. He left the game with a three-run lead and improved to 2-4 on the season. Brad Nelson came on and threw two scoreless innings before turning the game over to Michael Nix. Nix tossed a scoreless ninth to finish out the game.

Carlos Torres gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits in five innings and left the game trailing 3-0. He fell to 8-4 on the year. Joe Torres gave up a run in an inning and Ryan Rote threw 1.1 scoreless frames. Shaun Babula came on and retired the only two batters he faced.

Mississippi and Birmingham play the fifth game of this six-game set Saturday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. The M-Braves will go with righty James Parr while the Barons will send righty Kyle McCulloch to the hill.

On Saturday night at Trustmark Park, the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive an M-Braves mini-bat and the Bucket Boys will make an appearance. The Bucket Boys are a hip-hop percussive duo combining music, laughter, crowd interaction and positive life skills. This lively presentation is the original work of Vince Romanelli and Mitch Martin.
