Bravehearts collect 16 hits to defeat struggling Suns

PITTSFIELD, Mass. - The Worcester Bravehearts inched closer to clinching a playoff spot with an 8-3 win against the Pittsfield Suns on Aug. 3 at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield, Mass.

The Bravehearts collected 16 hits in the game including a 2-run home run by first baseman Mark DeYoung in the fifth inning. DeYoung finished 3-5 at the plate with four RBI, and second baseman Darian Ramage also went 3-5 with three runs scored.

Center fielder Brendan O'Reilly, third baseman Dylan Harris and left fielder Ian Strom also recorded multiple hits in the game.

Worcester took an early 2-0 lead on a single by Harris that scored two runs thanks to an error by Pittsfield center fielder Tyler Bell. With a 2-RBI single by DeYoung in the ninth inning and a sacrifice fly by catcher TJ Riccio, the Bravehearts tacked on three insurance runs to increase their lead to five runs.

Tufts University sophomore Kyle Slinger got the win in six innings of work for the Bravehearts.

Slinger gave up three runs on five hits to improve to 4-2 on the season. However, he did not record a strikeout in his outing. Worcester relievers Charlie Butler and Sean Gustin pitched three scoreless innings combined to hold the lead.

Pittsfield starter Mitch Holt dropped to 0-2 this season, as he gave up four runs on 10 hits in a six-inning outing.

The 29-21 Bravehearts will go for their 30th win of the season when they face the Torrington Titans at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at Fuessenich Park in Torrington, Conn.
