The Brampton Beast are pleased to announce the addition of five players for the upcoming 2013-2014 Central Hockey League season: Defensemen Jamie Vanderveeken, Steve Ward, Scott Farrell, and right wingers Kyle Ventura and Brett Vandehogen.
A solid two way defenseman with an offensive upside, Jamie Vanderveeken joins the Beast for his fifth season in the Central Hockey League. Vanderveeken, from Wallaceburg, ON began his hockey career in the OHL, which was highlighted by an appearance in the 2005 Memorial Cup with the Ottawa 67's. Coach DeSantis had the opportunity to play with Vanderveeken and stated that his newest signing will bring veteran leadership, a strong presence on the back end and a championship in 2009-2010 with the Rapid City Rush.
Steve Ward, a 27 year old Scarborough, ON native, is an East Coast Hockey League All-Star defenseman. In 2006-2007, Ward captained the Plymouth Whalers to an OHL Championship and a Memorial Cup appearance. Throughout his last six seasons of professional hockey, Ward was frequently called up to play in the AHL with the Albany River Rats and Portland Pirates. Ward also brings a winning pedigree to the Beast as in 2010-2011 ECHL season. Ward's dedicated play helped his Alaska Aces win both the Brabham and Kelly Cups.
Scott Farrell, an up-and-coming prospect from Ottawa, ON, looks to bring a scoring touch to the Beast's back line. Farrell began his hockey career in the Canadian Junior Hockey League, playing with the Kemptville 73's and the Pembroke Lumber Kings. In 2009, he attended Neumann University in Pennsylvania, where he played 4 years of NCAA III hockey. In his last season with the Knights while serving as the alternate captain, Farrell's 25 points helped propel him to lead DIII scoring as a defenseman and an NCAA All-American First Team nomination.
Kyle Ventura is a quick forward with a scoring touch. "He's the type of guy who will get under the skin of our opponents," said Coach DeSantis. "That's what will create his space as an agitator." Ventura played four seasons in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League. In 2008, Ventura had a phenomenal rookie season with the University of Toronto, leading the team with 16 goals. He continued his strong offensive play throughout his four seasons at U of T, leading the team in scoring for three separate seasons and serving as the team's alternate captain during his final campaign.
Brett Vandehogen is a 27-year-old right winger from Blenheim, ON. Coach DeSantis describes him as a character leader who spent 5 years playing CIS hockey for the University of Windsor, captaining his final season. In 2012-2013, Vandehogen was awarded the CIS (OUA West) Outstanding Student-Athlete Randy Gregg Award.
