Fort Worth Brahmas News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona - Texas overcame an early deficit on Saturday night to beat the Sundogs 5-1 in Arizona and head into the All-Star break on a winning note.

Tyler Butler scored the first goal of the game at the 6:48 mark of the first period when the Sundogs got a powerplay off of Andrew Lackner's interference penalty. But Butler's goal was the last of the scoring for Arizona as Texas goaltender Mark Guggenberger shut the door from then on. Guggenberger made 39 saves on 40 shots fired by the Sundogs.

The Brahmas took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission after Dan Nicholls and Lackner each scored first-period goals. For Nicholls, it was his first goal of the season, as well as his first goal in a Brahmas uniform.

Texas pulled away in the second period, scoring twice more in the first ten minutes of the middle frame. Chad Woollard scored his team-high 14th goal of the season at the 3:43 mark and defenseman Erik Spady beat Arizona netminder Mike Spillane just over eight minutes in. Spillane, who allowed four goals on 18 shots through 28:52, was pulled for Scott Reid.

The game got physical and multiple fights broke out down the stretch as the two teams combined for 89 penalty minutes in the third period. Phil Fox added a powerplay goal in the early stages of the third period to increase the Texas lead to 5-1, which would stand as the final score.

The Brahmas are back in action at the NYTEX Sports Centre on Sunday, January 15 when they face off against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at 5:00pm.
