Dayton Gems News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - Brett Lutes would give the Gems a one goal lead in the third period, but they would be unable to keep the first place Komets from bouncing back late in regulation and ultimately winning in overtime 4-3 on Sunday afternoon inside the historic War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
After a scoreless opening period, both teams would fire out of the gates in the second, with the Gems leveling their early shots deficit from the prior frame. The Komets would open the scoring with a greasy goal past netminder Bryan Hogan at 9:54. Dayton wouldn't have to wait long to respond, as Nick Fanto blasted in his 12th goal of the season pas the shoulder of Komets netminder Gerry Festa less than a minute later at 10:44, off the centering pass from Tim Hartung. With the Gems giving up a two man advantage later in the period, Fort Wayne's league-leading powerplay struck again at the 15:08 mark to jump out to the 2-1 lead. With time ticking away and with less than a minute remaining in the frame, Hartung himself found the back of the net with another hard shot from between the circles to skate his Gems into the second intermission deadlocked 2-2 with the Komets. Dayton edged the Komets in shots 13-10 in the period for a twenty minute total of 24-21 Komets.
Brett Lutes would pick up the loose puck through neutral ice and light the lamp for his 9th goal of the season unassisted at 9:52 to lead off the third period, and jump his Gems out in front of the Komets for the first time in the matchup. Battling back, Fort Wayne native Kaleigh Schrock evened the game at 3-3- with a tap-in goal past Hogan at 15:54 to take the game into sudden death overtime after the horn blew to end a solid sixty minutes of regulation.
Despite the Gems earning quality chances in the extra frame, it would be Fort Wayne's Bobby Chaumont who ended the game with a quick point blank rebound 2:27 in to seal the 4-3 Komet win.
With the overtime loss, the Gems record now stands at 12-14-7 and they earn one point in the Turner Conference Standings.
The Gems return to action next Friday night when they travel to the Quad City Mallards at 8pm.
