Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. (January 8, 2012) - Six different Quad City Mallards scored goals, five different Mallards provided at least two points and David Brown made 34 saves as the host Mallards defeated the Missouri Mavericks 6-1 Sunday.

The Mallards rebounded to claim victory in what was their final game before the Central Hockey League All-Star break- and their third contest in 48 hours- after falling to the Mavericks 6-3 in Missouri Saturday evening.

"We showed a lot of character and determination to come back from a tough loss while playing three in three nights," said Mallards Coach and General Manager David Bell. "That's a good note to go into the break on."

After a scoreless first period, the Mallards took control by scoring three straight second period goals. Quad City was on the power play when Obi Aduba's tip-in broke the deadlock at 2:08 of the second. Brandon Marino doubled the Mallard lead by burying a second power play goal from the side of the net at 7:27. The lead stretched to 3-0 when Bob Preece walked in through the back door to score the first even strength goal of the game at 16:35. Ed McGrane finally provided a Missouri response by converting a Sebastien Thinel centering pass to cut the gap to 3-1 at 17:58 of the second.

The Mallards would strike for three more goals in the third period to put Missouri away. The Quad City lead widened to 4-1 when Jeremy Boyer finished off a 2-on-1 rush with a blast from the right wing circle at 8:33 of the third. The Mavericks gambled and pulled goaltender Charlie Effinger for an extra attacker with 8:13 remaining in the game only for Jared Brown to score an empty net goal just seven seconds later. Justin Chwedoruk- who also had a pair of assists- scored the Mallards' third power play goal of the night from point blank range to cap off the win with just 11 seconds left.

The Mallards return to action on home ice Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Dayton Gems. The Mallards will wear special edition Central Hockey League twentieth anniversary jerseys during that contest. Those jerseys will be up for bid in a silent auction during Friday evening's game.
