Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
WICHITA, Kansas (April 10) - The Brahmas were defeated by the Wichita Thunder by the final score of 4-1 in game one of the best-of-seven, semi-final playoff series Wednesday night at INTRUST Bank Arena.
The first period featured one goal scored by each team. Shawn Szydlowski gave Fort Worth a 1-0 lead at 7:44 when he fired a wrist shot past Wichita netminder Torrie Jung from the right-wing circle. The Thunder evened the score at 9:52 when Kevin Young back-handed a rebound home after a multi-player tussle in the goalie's crease.
Wichita scored two power-play goals in the middle frame to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Chad Painchaud ripped a slap shot by Fort Worth goaltender Kristofer Westblom at 7:12 to give the Thunder a one-goal edge. R.G. Flath redirected a puck in front of the net at 14:22 to extend the Wichita lead to 3-1.
With under a minute to play in regulation and the Fort Worth net empty, Flath scored his second goal of the game to seal a 4-1 Thunder victory.
Westblom made 29 saves on 32 shots faced between the posts for Fort Worth, falling for just the second time this postseason.
Jung stopped 22 of 23 shots for the Thunder to earn his fifth win of the playoffs.
Wichita's success on special teams decided the game. The Thunder converted on both of their power-play opportunities, while holding the Brahmas to an 0-for-4 mark on the man advantage.
With the loss, Fort Worth falls behind 1-0 in the best-of-seven series. Game two of the semi-finals will be played Thursday, April 11 at INTRUST Bank Arena at 7:05pm. The series shifts to the NYTEX Sports Centre in North Richland Hills Thursday, April 18 and Saturday, April 20 for games three and four.
