Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX - It took a shootout to decide Wednesday night's game between Bossier-Shreveport and Texas at the NyTex Sports Centre, with the Brahmas finally winning it by a final score of 2-1. The tightly contested game was scoreless for more than 42 minutes before the first tally was scored.
David Cacciola was great for the Brahmas with 41 saves as the Mudbugs put 34 shots on net in the final two periods and overtime. The Mudbugs penalty killing unit was also a perfect 9 for 9 on the night. Earning one point in the shootout, the Mudbugs have reached 20 points for the season with a record of 9-4-2.
Both teams skated hard in an entertaining first period in which the Brahmas sent 11 pucks to the net, compared with eight for the Mudbugs. There were a few scoring chances both ways, but neither team cracked the scoreboard and for the first time this season, the Mudbugs went to the locker room with no score after one.
Texas had five powerplay chances, including a 50 second two-man advantage in the second period, but the Mudbugs penalty killers stood tall and kept the Brahmas off the scoreboard for another period. The Bugs were also held scoreless despite a 12-8 shot advantage in the middle frame and the was still knotted at zero after 40 minutes.
Texas finally broke the deadlock early in the third period when Jason Deitsch put the rebound of a Scott Sheppard shot past Ken Carroll to make it 1-0 Brahmas at 2:36 of the third. Later in the period, after missing on their first five powerplay chances of the night, the Bugs finally cashed in on the man-advantage. Todd Paul fired a slapshot from the point with Neil Clark and Brett Smith crashing the front. Cacciola stopped Clark but not Smith, who backhanded home his sixth goal of the year to tie the game at one with just 5:05 remaining.
Bossier-Shreveport outshot Texas 4-1 in the overtime, but neither team could score and the game went to a shootout. Deitsch scored as Texas' first shooter to put the Brahmas up 1-0. The next six combined shooters for both teams would miss before Simon Mangos tied the shootout at one as The Bugs' fourth shooter. Pete Rouleau then beat Carroll stick side and Smith missed as the last shooter to give Texas the 2-1 shootout win.
Carroll was strong with 25 saves, but dropped to 3-2-1 on the season while Cacciola improved to 3-3-0 this year. The Mudbugs outshot the Brahmas 42-27 and finished 1 for 6 on the powerplay, while the Brahmas were 0 for 9.
With their five-game road trip now complete, the Mudbugs will finally get back on home ice this weekend for a pair of games at the CenturyTel Center. Friday night the Mudbugs host Rio Grande Valley at 7:05 pm Saturday night the Bugs will battle the Brahmas again for the fifth time this season, also at 7:05.
