Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (December 12)- The cold weather in Youngstown followed the Brahmas onto the ice as Texas' offense was unable to warm-up and lost 4-3 in overtime against the SteelHounds Wednesday evening.
The northeast divisional matchup began in the Brahmas favor as forward Tyler Skworchinski slipped a powerplay goal past SteelHounds goaltender Layne Sedevie unassisted at the 12:36 mark in the first period. The highlight of the first was the relentless Brahmas penalty kill as they fought off four minutes from forward Mark Carragher's high sticking double minor.
Brahmas special teams were effective in the second period as Chris Thompson scored his second goal of the season over Sedevie on the powerplay. Defenseman Mike Velllinga had the assist. There were a combined 24 penalty minutes in the second and a Youngstown ejection of SteelHounds defenseman Milan Maslonka with just over two minutes remaining in the period.
Texas went to the locker room in the second with a 2-0 lead, but Youngstown came out, finding their game in the third. SteelHound Adam Smyth scored for Youngstown unassisted at the 15:58 mark. Brahmas goaltender David Cacciola faced 13 shots in the third, but was unable to stop one from Jason Baird with just over one minute after the Smyth goal.
The Brahmas found themselves in the penalty box leading to another four minute powerplay for Youngstown in the game. This time the SteelHounds took advantage as Eric Przepiorka slapped a goal past Cacciola, giving Youngstown their first lead of the night.
Texas' powerplay shined again, this time in the third as Kevin McLeod scored seven minutes after the SteelHounds goal with a feed from Jordan Cameron. The period continued without change, resulting in the extra period.
The Brahmas, 1-0 in overtime, were unable to keep their flawless record as David Cacciola allowed a Joel Irving goal with under a minute remaining in the overtime. Texas went three for six on the powerplay but were outshot 33-16.
Texas will face Youngstown again on Friday, December 14 in Ohio for a 6:05 PM start. The game can be seen on CHL Network. The Brahmas will return home to play at the NYTEX Sports Centre December 28 as they face the Odessa Jackalopes for a 7:05 PM start.
