Bradenton Gets Best of Joes Again

July 11, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release

The Joes couldn't avoid their second extra-inning loss in three nights Wednesday, as a costly error in the top of the 10th inning allowed Bradenton to beat Anderson, 4-2, and sweep the first series of the second half of the season.

After marvelous efforts from the dueling starters -- Pete Nickerson for Anderson (0-3, 13-35 overall) and Luke Palmer for Bradenton (3-0, 27-20) -- each team's offense scored two runs to force the game to extras, when the only Joes error of the night handed the Juice a win.

With runners at second and third and two men down in the top of the 10th inning, Bradenton catcher Nick Corbeil hit what appeared to be an inning-ending pop up to shallow left field. However, as Hector Borg, Blake Gailen and Kevin Noles all converged on the ball, none of them made the play and the ball fell between all three. Borg attempted an effort but his misplay earned him an error. Both runs came across to score on the mishap, resulting in the Juice's game-winning scores.

Anderson would go down in order in the bottom half of the inning to secure the loss.

"The error's tough," Nickerson said. "But it's baseball, things happen and you can't control it. Tonight we were unlucky."

Before the unfortunate 10th inning, the Joes played solidly against the Juice, a team to which Anderson has now dropped eight straight games.

Nickerson allowed only two runs through six innings of work, matching Bradenton's Palmer, who took a no-hitter through 4.2 innings before finishing up with six innings of one-run, two-hit baseball.

For the Joes offensively, Noles went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Heath Keel went 1-for-4 and scored the only other Anderson run.

Brenan Herrera led the way for Bradenton, going 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI.

Derek Hawk earned the win for the Juice, improving to 2-5. Chase Leatherwood took the tough-luck loss for the Joes, dropping to 0-1. Marshall Plouffe earned his first save of the season in closing the game.

Anderson hits the road for a three-game series starting Thursday. The Joes will visit the Charlotte County Redfish for the second time at Charlotte County Stadium this season. The last time Anderson stopped by, the Joes took two of three games from the Redfish June 7-9.

Anderson's starting pitchers figure to be Ronald Ball in game one, followed by Jan Granado and Daniel Howard in games two and three.

"I think we'll turn it around," Nickerson said. "The end of the (first) half we started winning some games, so I have a good feeling about this road trip."
