Bozied, Furmaniak power Beavers to 12-7 win over Grizzlies

FRESNO, Calif. -Tagg Bozied and J.J. Furmaniak hit two home runs each as the Portland Beavers tallied a season-high five homers on their way to a 12-7 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies Saturday night.

Furmaniak was 2-for-3 with two walks, four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Beavers, who pounded out 18 hits to tie their season high. Bozied, who also drove in four runs, had three hits for a second straight game and scored twice.

Furmaniak and Bozied, who both have nine home runs on the season, each hit two-run homers in the first inning for an early 4-0 lead. The two added solo shots in the second inning, and Yamid Haad followed with a two-run shot as the Beavers grabbed an 8-1 lead in the frame before extending it to 9-1 on an RBI single by Bozied in the third.

Steve Watkins, who had received three runs of support in his first three starts with the Beavers, worked 6.0 innings for his first win of the season with the Beavers (29-34).

Watkins (1-2) aided his cause by going 3-for-4 at the plate.

Chris Begg (2-5), who eight days ago threw six scoreless innings against Portland, retired just four batters and gave up eight runs on eight hits and three walks in the loss.

The Beavers upped their lead to 11-2 in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Freddy Guzman and a sac fly by Furmaniak.

Down by 10, the Grizzlies rallied for four runs against reliever Tim Byrdak in the seventh to reduce their deficit to 12-6 with Jamie Athas capping the inning with a three-run double.

Lance Niekro hit his fifth home run for Fresno (30-33).

The Beavers conclude their series with the Grizzlies on Sunday night at 6:05 p.m.
