Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.âRiverKings fans may be aware of the team's special relationship with the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi and its mission to bring Boys & Girls Clubs of America to DeSoto County. The cities of Hernando, Horn Lake, Olive Branch and Southaven all committed to establishing a club in each of their cities.
The Boys & Girls Club of Southaven is preparing to open their doors of hope and encouragement to children of all ages on April 1, but before that happens, they must find chairs where the children can sit, learn, and play; equipment to help in this process; and desks and supplies for staff.
The building is located on Brookhaven Drive off Hwy. 51, former site of the Southaven Community Center and the Jaycees building.
"It was so wonderful of the mayor and the city to donate this building to us," Southaven Unit Director Samantha Hood said. "It was completely empty when we got it, of course. So now we're in the process of getting the building ready to receive children and hiring staff."
The club is part of Boys and Girls Clubs of America, whose mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
Boys and Girls Clubs provides a neighborhood-based building designed solely for youth programs and activities. It is open every day after school and has full-time, trained youth development professionals who provide positive role models, mentors and support. It's affordable, with yearly dues averaging between $5 and $10. Programs range from pottery, music and art to organized sports and leadership groups.
The club's wish list includes a television (25 inches or greater), TV mobile carts, a VCR and/or DVD player, a CD/cassette player, shelving for books and storage, partitions, file cabinets, copy machine, printer and vacuum cleaner.
They are also requesting sports equipment (basketballs, soccer balls, goals, etc.), magazine subscriptions or back issues of magazines, books for readers of varied ages and skill levels, First-Aid kit items (band-aids, antiseptic, etc.), tables (round or square), chairs and living room furniture such as chairs and couches.
RiverKings fans are asked if they can help in any way to call Hood at the club at 662-393-0292. For more information visit the national website at www.bgca.org or the regional site, www.bgcmsdelta.org.
