Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH - Bowie Baysox designated hitter Caleb Joseph would like to play against the Akron Aeros all season long.
In four games thus far in 2013, Joseph has 10 RBI against Akron pitching. Thursday night, he swatted a pair of homers and a double to drive in four runs and lead the Baysox to a wild, 13-11, 10-inning victory over the Aeros in the opener of a four-game series at Canal Park.
Akron (5-9) was one out away from salting away an 11-9 win in the ninth when Ty Kelly singled off Aeros reliever Brett Brach (0-1). Joseph followed by blasting a long home run to left on a 1-2 pitch to tie the game, 11-11.
In the top of the 10th, Brach issued a walk with one out and then hit a batter with two outs. Xavier Avery's slow grounder to first took a bad hop off the cut of the grass, and rolled into right field for a hit, scoring pinch-runner Garabez Rosa to take the lead. A wild pitch forced in another to make it 13-11.
The Aeros got a couple runners aboard in the bottom of the 10th, but failed to score against closer Zech Zinicola, who posted his third save of the season. Zinicola made a winner of Bowie righthander Clay Schrader (3-0), who turned in 2 2/3 innings of relief work, allowing just one run.
Joseph, who took over the EL RBI lead with 20, was 3-6 in the game. He also homered in the seventh when the Baysox (8-7) scored five times. He and Buck Britton hit back-to-back homers that inning. Britton then hit another in the eighth.
Chun Chen homered twice for Akron, his second and third of the season. He hit a solo shot in the first and a two-run blast to center field during a five-run seventh. All of Chen's homers have come against the Baysox. It was the first multi-homer game for an Aeros player since last May 15th when Jared Goedert hit two at Erie.
Carlos Moncrief also homered for Akron, his first at the AA level. Moncrief had two hits, part of a 15-hit night for Akron, which matched a season-high. Catcher Chris Wallace, playing in his first game at Canal Park, was 4-6, with four singles and an RBI.
The Baysox, however, smacked 19 hits, the most against the Aeros this season. Using a five-run rally in the seventh against Cole Cook and Edward Paredes, the Baysox erased a 6-3 deficit.
The game took 4 hours and 15 minutes to play and featured 34 combined hits, Each team left the same number of men on base as it scored in the game: Bowie, 13, Akron 11.
Akron starter Paolo Espino worked the first five innings, allowing three runs and striking out seven. He left with a 5-3 lead, but was denied a decision. With 22 career wins for the Aeros, he is one win away from tying the franchise record for career wins.
The Aeros and Baysox will play game two of the series Friday night at 6:35, with post-game fireworks scheduled. RHP Mike Wright (0-0) will start for Bowie, and RHP Toru Murata (1-1) will get the ball for the Aeros. The game will be carried live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com.
