Iowa Cubs News Release
Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs announced today that they have selected the contract of RHP Michael Bowden and added him to the Major League roster. LHP Brooks Raley has been optioned to Iowa. In other moves, C Luis Flores has been placed on the paternity list, C Chad Noble joins Iowa from double-A Tennessee, and INF Edgar Gonzalez returns to Iowa after signing a minor league contract with the Cubs.
Bowden began the season with Chicago, but was designated for assignment and outrighted to Iowa on May 28. He has no record, a 2.41 ERA (5ER/18.2IP), and two saves in 13 games with Iowa. He pitched a scoreless inning last night, extending his scoreless streak to 12 consecutive innings over his last nine appearances.
Raley pitched in relief for Chicago last night against the Los Angeles Angels and allowed two runs in 4.1 innings to finish the game. Raley is 6-6 with a 4.91 ERA (48ER/88.0IP) in 17 games (16 starts) with Iowa this season.
Flores is batting .189 (24-for-127) with four home runs and 12 RBI in 40 games with Iowa this season, but is batting .300 (9-for-30) with four doubles, two home runs, and five RBI in his last eight games. Flores will return home to Texas this weekend for the birth of his second child.
Noble began the season at high-A Daytona and was promoted to Tennessee on May 24. He is batting .238 (40-for-168) with seven doubles, a home run, and 11 RBI in 49 games between the two stops. The Cubs drafted Noble in the 37th round of the 2010 draft out of Northwestern University.
Gonzalez hit .286 (8-for-28) in nine games with Iowa last season before getting released from his contract at the end of April to play for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan. Gonzalez last played for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic in March. Gonzalez played in the big leagues in 2009-10 with the San Diego Padres. He is the older brother of Los Angeles Dodgers' first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.
The Cubs open a four-game series against the Albuquerque Isotopes tonight at 7:05 at Principal Park. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live on iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
