BOUCHER BOUNCES WORCESTER IN 12
QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--- The Worcester Tornadoes weathered the best start of the season for Eric Gagne, but got nipped by a one out RBI single in the bottom of the twelfth and slipped to 1-1 in the second half of the season, 4-3. Nick Salotti (4) blasted the baseball over the wall in left center on the first pitch he saw from Eric Gagne in the second giving Worcester the early lead. The Capitales matched in the fourth on an RBI double from Eddie Lantigua. The back and fourth continued with Mike O'Malley scoring on a wild pitch in the fifth but Quebec fired back with a pair on RBI's from Patrick Deschenes and Alex Nunez to take the 3-2 lead in the sixth.
The Major League record holder in consecutive saves exited the ballgame after the first out in the eighth inning to a curtain call from 5,017 fans in line for the win. Josef Frias, letting in three over six innings scheduled for the loss until Chris Colabello singled in the top of the ninth, eventually scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat of Salotti. Capitale reliever Derek McDaid was charged with a blown save.
After Eddie Pena threw four scoreless innings, his longest outing of the year, Santiago Ramirez (4-3) shut down the Caps in the eleventh. The bottom of the twelfth was not as kind. Douglas Toro doubled and was plated by Sebastian Boucher's single with one out; he had been 0-5 previous to that at-bat. Quebec closer Jason Schutt (2-3) scooped the win with two and a third innings worked. The loss snapped Worcester's three game win streak and kept the Capitales undefeated in extra inning ball games.
The finale and rubber match of the three game set will take place tomorrow night at 7:05pm and will pit LHP Zack Zuercher (2-4) for the Tornadoes against RHP Dan Sausville (4-1) for Quebec.
