Streaks: BattleWings-W3 , Dusters L1
THE COACHES:
Jon Norris (9-2, First season), 19-9 as an af2 head coach.
Steve Purdue (2-9, 3rd season)
THE STAKES:
The BattleWings hope to be well rested after a week off.
To attain their goal of winning a division title, they must continue to win because the team ahead of them in the standings, The RGV Dorados, has only lost once. Of course, that loss was to the BattleWings.
The BattleWings hope to generate some momentum leading up to the final two regular season home games on 2007.
DROP BACK:
In 2006, the BattleWings split games with Amarillo, losing at home and winning on the road.
This season, the BattleWings have a three-game winning streak going. Two weeks ago, they defeated the Corpus Christi Sharks 81-35. The Wings have lost at home once this season, and once on the road.
Through 11 games in 2006, the BattleWings were 2-9.
THE SERIES:
Amarillo 86, BOSSIER-SHV. 66 4/23/2005
AMARILLO 51, Bossier-Shv. 38 6/25/2005
IN 2006,
Amarillo 53, BOSSIR-SHV 34 5/13/2006
Bossier-Shv. 46, AMARILLO 34 7/22/06
LAST TIME THEY MET:
The BattleWings picked off three Amarillo passes on their way to a 46-34 victory, the only road win of the season for the Wings. The BattleWings also recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
THE IFs:
If the BattleWings defeat the Dusters, it would:
- Give Jon Norris his 20th win as an af2 head coach.
- Give them a four-game winning streak overall.
- Keep pressure on the Southwest division front-runners, the RGV Dorados.
- Give the Wings a two-game winning streak over the Dusters.
- Guarantee the BattleWings the best single season won-loss record in franchise history.
DIVISION STANDINGS:
Southwest
Rio Grande Valley Dorados 10-1 .909 5-1 .833
Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings 9- 2 .818 6-0 1.000
Corpus Christi Sharks 2 - 9 .182 2-5 .286
Texas Copperheads 2-9 .182 1-4 .286
Laredo Lobos 1-10 .091 1-5 .167
THAT WACKY SCHEDULE MAKER:
Rio Grande Valley's only loss this season came at the hands of the BattleWings. Their 2007 schedule includes three encounters with the presently 1-9 Laredo Lobos. They also are being forced to run the gauntlet of three showdowns with the currently 1-9 Corpus Christi Sharks.
Let's not overlook the two games against 2-9 Texas.
The BattleWings, of course, play those same teams home and home. The Dorados have defeated the highly-regarded South Georgia Wildcats.
Instead of the extra games against division opponents, the BattleWings have on the schedule the only unbeaten team in af2 (Scranton/ Wilkes Barre), South Georgia, Manchester and Arkansas.
NORRIS SAYS:
"Steel sharpens steel. We like our schedule. Hopefully it works to our advantage in the playoffs"
"Our guys really needed the week off. I have confidence that they will shake off any rust and be well prepared to play in Amarillo."
Jon Norris, Bossier - Shreveport: (First season)
Jon Norris came to the BattleWings from the Austin Wranglers of the AFL where he served as the Defensive Coordinator and Line Coach. He made a demonstrative difference in Austin where in 2005, the offensive line gave up only 4 sacks which led the AFL. Norris spent 3 seasons with the Dallas Desperados in the AFL where he served as line coach and special teams coach. Norris moved to Dallas after a stint as assistant head coach and offensive and defensive line coach for the Oklahoma Wranglers. His Oklahoma defense finished 3rd in AFL with 21 sacks.
Norris served as head coach for the Tulsa Talons (af2) and led them to the playoffs in their inaugural season with an offense that averaged 52.7 points per game and a defense that led the league with 33 interceptions
Norris spent time in the NFL with the New England Patriots in 1984 and 1985. He played for the Chicago Bears in 1987 and 1988. Norris is married with two sons.
Steve Perdue; Amarillo (third season):
Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Steve Purdue is in the midst of his third full season at the helm of the Amarillo Dusters, and his fourth season with the team overall. Perdue took over as Head Coach in week four of the 2005 season, leading the Dusters to a 49-31 victory over the San Diego Riptide in his first game. Coach Perdue led the team to 6 regular-season wins as well as an upset road victory over the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz in the opening round of the 2005 playoffs. As a result of the 59-56 victory, the Dusters became the first expansion team in af2 history to win a playoff game. In arena football circles, Perdue is known as a fiery, disciplined leader. After taking over as Head Coach in week four, Perdue turned the team around as they were the most penalized team in af2, and finished the last 12 weeks of the season as the least penalized team in the entire league. The defensive unit also allowed 10 fewer points per game under his guidance as the Head Coach.
A native of Amarillo, Coach Perdue played locally at Randall High School, and also played four seasons professionally from 2000-2003. He is married with three children.
