Series Record: 3-1 Steeldogs

Last Meeting: 63-42 Battlewings on 3/27/2004

Streaks: BattleWings, L1 Copperheads L2

Coaches: Jon Norris (7-2, First season), 17-9 as an af2 head coach.

Ron Selesky, (5-, 2nd year at Alabama) 31-26 as an af2 head coach

THE STAKES:

The Battlewings started the second half of the season with a win at Texas. They must continue to win if they hope to achieve their goal of earning the af2 Southwest division title. The Steeldogs are looking up at two teams in the af2 South. While this is a non-division game, it is a crucial encounter for both squads.

THE SERIES: The Steeldogs won the first three showdowns between these franchises, but they have not faced on another in three seasons. This renders information about previous games essentially superfluous.

LAST TIME THEY MET:

Quarterback Sherrard Poteete threw four touchdown passes as the BattleWings opened the 2004 season with a home victory over the Steeldogs.

Kenton Evans, who played against the Battlewings last week as the Texas quarterback, shared the duty with Jeff Aaron against the Wings in 2004. Evans fared better, completing 14 of 17 passes with four touchdowns. Aaron was intercepted twice. The Steeldogs turned the ball over six times.

THE IFs:

If the BattleWings defeat Alabama, it would ...

- Give Jon Norris an 18-9 record as an af2 head coach.

- Help them keep pressure on the southwest division front-runners, the RGV Dorados

- Give the BattleWings a two-game road winning streak.

- Give the BattleWings a two-game winning streak against the Steeldogs.

HEAD COACHES:

Jon Norris, Bossier - Shreveport: (First season)

Jon Norris came to the BattleWings from the Austin Wranglers of the AFL where he served as the Defensive Coordinator and Line Coach. He made a demonstrative difference in Austin where in 2005, the offensive line gave up only 4 sacks which led the AFL. Norris spent 3 seasons with the Dallas Desperados in the AFL where he served as line coach and special teams coach. His line racked up some impressive stats, both offensively and defensively. Under Norris' leadership, Will Pettis led AFL with 88 kickoff returns for 1750 yards and 4 TD's. Norris moved to Dallas after a stint as assistant head coach and offensive and defensive line coach for the Oklahoma Wranglers. His Oklahoma defense finished 3rd in AFL with 21 sacks.

Norris served as head coach for the Tulsa Talons (af2) and led them to the playoffs in their inaugural season with an offense that averaged 52.7 points per game and a defense that led the league with 33 interceptions

Norris spent time in the NFL with the New England Patriots in 1984 and 1985. He played for the Chicago Bears in 1987 and 1988. Norris is married with two sons.

THIS WEEK'S QUOTES:

Jon Norris, on the Steeldogs:

They are an excellent team and very well coached. They play in a tough division, so don't let their record fool you. We are expecting quite a challenge this week."

On his team's new faces: "I thought Kert Turner performed well, as we expected him to. Chris Ibezam's performance was much improved over his outing in Little Rock. We're trying to Bring Tramissian Davis along a little bit at a time, and I'm encouraged by what I saw."

On the short week of preparation: "The schedule makers didn't do us any favors, that's for sure. You never want to play back to back road games with less than a full week of preparation time in between. Our players will respond well. I wouldn't expect anything less."

Ron Selesky - Alabama

Selesky earned af2 Coach of the Year honors in 2002, guiding the expansion Albany Conquest to a regular-season mark of 13-3 and a Northeast Division title. He spent the 2001 season as the head coach of the Louisville Fire, leading the team to a 6-10 mark. He is an Arena Football League and af2 coaching veteran. He served as the defensive coordinator for the Columbus Destroyers in 2005 under Head Coach Chris Spielman. Prior to that, Selesky spent the 2004 season on the sidelines for the Carolina Cobras, beginning the year as the team's defensive coordinator before finishing the season as the head coach. Selesky spent the 2003 season as head coach and director of football operations for the Buffalo Destroyers, prior to the team relocating to Columbus, Ohio. He also served as the director of player personnel and assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Storm from 1997 to 1999. With the Storm, his teams compiled a 31-11 regular season record and earned a berth in the 1998 ArenaBowl.
