Borrell, Pope combine on two-hit shutout for Trenton

(Trenton, NJ)- Danny Borrell tossed eight shutout innings and allowed just two hits to lead the Thunder to a 3-0 win over New Hampshire on Thursday at Waterfront Park. The victory was the 9th shutout of the year for Trenton.

Borrell (3-4) allowed just a pair of doubles on the evening as he tied his career-high in strikeouts (9). He allowed doubles in the 4th and 5th Innings and walked just two as New Hampshire (32-39) managed just five base runners on the night. The eight innings for Borrell is his longest outing since having labrum surgery in 2003.

Justin Pope came on to work a scoreless 9th Inning for his 14th save. Pope has recorded save in each of his last eight outings.

Trenton (37-35) took a 1-0 lead in the 1st Inning off Fisher Cats starter Danny Hill. Gabe Lopez doubled and moved to 3rd Base on a Brett Gardner singled. DH Randy Ruiz hit into a double play, but Lopez scored for a 1-0 lead. Trenton added two more runs in the 4th Inning as 3B Kevin Howard's single with the bases loaded scored Bronson Sardinha and Eric Duncan. Hill (1-3) allowed three runs and four hits in five innings for the loss.

Trenton begins a four-game series with the Connecticut Defenders on Friday at 7:05 PM. Phil Hughes (3-3, 3.64) goes to the mound for the Thunder against the Defenders' Chris Begg (5-7, 3.80).
