Toronto Argonauts News Release

His 75-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the last game of the season helped propel the Argos to their first playoff appearance in three seasons last year, and today, the Argos announced that veteran defensive back Antonious Bonner would be back in 2003 to help build on last year's success as the free-agent re-signed with the team. As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The seven-year CFL veteran originally joined the Boatmen in 1997 as a free-agent and has been with the team since their Grey Cup championship season. Last season he led the team in passes broken up with 7 and added 51 total tackles, a fumble recovery and his crucial interception against Calgary in the Argos' last game.

"Antonious was a key member of our defence last season, and bringing him back was a priority for us this off-season," said Argos head coach Michael "Pinball" Clemons. "We are excited about our experience on defence, and Antonious is a big part of that.

The 6'0" 210-pound Bonner, who played his university football at the University of Mississippi, originally joined the league when he signed with the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1995. He signed with the Argos in 1997 and will be playing his seventh season in Double Blue in 2003.

The 30-year old Chicago native re-joins fellow free-agent defensive backs Orlondo Steinauer and Adrion Smith to help lead the Argos defence as the team celebrates its 130th Anniversary this season.

The Toronto Argonauts, North America's oldest professional football team, celebrate their 130th anniversary in 2003 with 14 Grey Cup championships to their credit, the most in Canadian Football League history. For Argo ticket information call (416) 545-1777.
