Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA â Veteran import wide receiver Reggie Jones, who joined the Ottawa Renegades during the second half of the 2002 inaugural season, has signed a contract with the Renegades for one year with a club option for a second season.
The 31-year-old from Kansas City, Missouri, played six games for the Renegades last season and caught 28 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown before being released to pursue any possible late-season NFL opportunities.
The 6-foot, 195-pound receiver made his return to the CFL with Ottawa after spending the previous three seasons in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers (2000 and 2001) and the Kansas City Chiefs in training camp in 2002. During the 2000 season in San Diego, Jones made 22 catches for 253 yards (an 11.5-yard average).
In 1999, Jones played eight games for the Saskatchewan Roughriders where he caught 38 passes for 625 yards (a 16.4-yard average) and three touchdowns after joining the team late in September.
"We're delighted to have Reggie back and fully expect him to play a much more prominent role in 2003," said Renegades general manager Eric Tillman. "Obviously, Reggie is a big, skilled receiver, but joining us so late last year made it difficult for him to make a significant contribution.
"This year, having the benefit of attending training camp and playing on the short side, Reggie will play a major role in our offensive success," added Tillman.
Jones wowed NFL scouts not by playing football, but with speed and athleticism while competing in track for the Louisiana State University Tigers. He ran the lead leg for LSU's 4x400-meter relay team that won the NCAA championship in 1992 and 1993.
In triple jump, Jones set what was then a school record in 1992 with an effort of 56 feet, 2 inches. The mark has since been broken twice.
Jones also ranks ninth in Louisiana State history with a long jump of 25 feet, 5½-inches. Ottawa resident Glenroy Gilbert, a track teammate of Jones at LSU, ranks sixth in school history with a leap of 25 feet, 8¾ inches.
In the spring of 1998 while playing for the London Monarchs in NFL Europe, Jones led the league in scoring (non-kickers) by scoring 42 points on seven touchdowns in 10 games.
