Bombers Sweep Pump Jacks and Take over First Place for the Season
August 8, 2012 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
Brazos Valley Bombers News Release
The Bombers played a huge game tonight against the Pump Jacks at Driller Park. The game was tight between the two teams, but the Bombers came out on top 8-7. The win also put the Bombers in first place for the overall 2012 season of the TCL.
The Bombers were able to have a big inning in the second inning and score four runs. Third baseman and Left fielder Brandon Wood each hit singles to center. Myles Parma came to the plate and laid down a bunt but the Pump Jacks pitcher over threw the first baseman and that allowed Smith and Wood to score and moved Parma to third. Designated hitter Brad Porras hit a chopper to the third baseman who mishandled to ball and let Parma score the third run. Shortstop Nick Smelser hit a single to right field and came home to score on an infield single to First baseman James Wharton. Wood would score the only run in the third inning. Wood led off the inning by dropping down a nice bunt down the first base line. He would come home on a grounder by Brad Porras that was not handled by the Pump Jack catcher allowing Wood to step on the base. The Bombers would retake the lead in the sixth inning. Second baseman Matt Smith led the inning off with an infield single and then came home on a right field single from James Wharton. The Bombers added two runs in the seventh inning. Wood led the inning off with a walk. Catcher Myles Parma hit a single to right field but it was misplayed by the right fielder and that allowed Wood to come to the plate and score. Parma would score to make the game 8-5 on an infield single by Smelser.
Luis Dejesus started on the hill tonight for the Bombers. The right hander pitched the first 2.1 innings. Logan Burch then came in and pitched an inning of relief. The Woodlands native, Andrew Godail came in and pitched very well for the Bombers. Andrew recorded seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Franco Pace came in with two outs in the eighth inning and recorded a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning. Derek Mazzio was called upon to pitch the ninth inning. With runners at second and third with two outs, Mazzio got a ground ball that Smelser fielded and then fired to Wharton to seal the 8-7 victory. Andrew Godail was named the H&R Block Never Settle For Less Player of the Game!
The Bombers made great plays defensively for the pitching staff tonight. The pitching staff found themselves in jams at times, but the defense stepped up at the big moments.
The Bombers will host The Woodlands Strykers tomorrow at American Momentum Bank Ballpark for the final home game of the 2012 season. The game starts at 7:05 and is a Thirsty Thursday with $1 Beer and Soda compliments of Western Beverages! There will also be a Gabe Bock w/TEXAGS bobble giveaway at the game as well. The Bombers close out the regular season Friday against the Marshals from Allen High School. For information or to order tickets, call (979)779-PLAY or visit bvbombers.com.
