Brazos Valley Bombers News Release

AMARILLO, Texas - The Brazos Valley Bombers fell to the Amarillo Sod Squad Saturday night, 7-6, in one of the most hotly contested matchups of the summer.

For the second game in a row, the Bombers showcased a night of offensive success highlighted by an out-of-the-park home run. Even in defeat, Brazos Valley demonstrated extreme promise and set up a must-see series finale rubber match on Sunday night.

The Bombers took the lead in the top of the first, breaking the team's trend of having to battle back in the latter innings. Second baseman Daniel Altman hit his first home run with the team, scoring himself and shortstop Casey Sunseri to kick off the game in bombastic fashion.

Brazos Valley enjoyed further dominance in the fifth inning with the help of excellent at-bat approaches. Third baseman Troy Viola, right fielder Trevor Davis, left fielder Grayson Tatrow and Sunseri all scored, with RBI credits going to center fielder Dylan Rock, designated hitter Ryan Snell and Sunseri.

Amarillo managed to narrow the deficit in the sixth inning, scratching across four runs with the help of three singles and a shot over the right field wall. The home team tied things outright in the bottom of the seventh with a two-RBI single just inside fair territory, then secured the walk off victory with the help of a throwing error in the ninth.

Starting pitcher Carson Atwood led the charge on the mound, throwing five innings of scoreless baseball. Across his 19 batters faced, Atwood allowed only two hits. The starter also contributed seven of the team's 10 strikeouts throughout the night.

With Saturday's rematch having evened the score, Brazos Valley falls to a 14-14 record on the summer while Amarillo climbs to 11-16. Within the second half of the Texas Collegiate League season, holding its own playoff implications, the Bombers are now 3-3, and Amarillo is 2-4.

The Bombers will return to action Sunday, July 11 for the series finale. With a 7:05 first pitch, Brazos Valley is looking to use Sunday to take two of three over the Sod Squad. The navy and gold will then return to Edible Field on Wednesday, July 14 for a two-game homestand against the Victoria Generals featuring both Margaritaville Wednesday and Thirsty Thursday.
