Rockford Lightning News Release
Rockford, IL. JD's Bar and Grill was packed Tuesday night for the Lightning CBA College Draft Party. Season ticket holders and Bolt fans kicked off the night by celebrating the unveiling of the Lightning's new logo. Shortly after 7:00 pm, Coach Daleo emerged from the "War Room" with his first pick of the 2004 draft.
Jabahri Brown, a 6-foot-10 power forward center from Oklahoma, was selected by the Bolts in the first round (fifth pick overall). Brown played 628 minutes for the Sooners last season, scoring 177 point with 23 blocks and 29 steals. He managed to catch Coach Daleo's eye during the Portsmouth, VA Invitational Scouting Combine last June.
Coach Daleo continued his hunt for long, athletic players in the second round. 7-foot center, Anwar Ferguson, led the NCAA in blocked shots a season ago. A Houston alum, like Assistant Coach Renaldo Thomas, Coach Daleo expects big things from his new post player.
In round three, Louisville big man, Kendall Dartez was drafted by the Lightning. Before Louisville, The Sporting News rated Dartez the number two high school center in the nation. At 6-foot-10, Dartez started 28 games for the Cardinals and blocked 20 shots in 14.1 minutes per contest.
The final three picks of the night were Sidney Holmes, a 6-foot-7 forward from Lewis University, Abe Keita, a 6-foot-11 center from St. John's, and 6-foot-7 Jerrick Oliver from McNeese State.
"I had a Plan A, a Plan B, and a Plan C," says Coach Daleo, "they all came together and I'm very happy with the results. We're looking forward to another winning season of Lightning Basketball."
