Steelheads go for height and shooters in 2004 CBA draft

Gary, IN The Gary Steelheads participated in the 19th Annual CBA Draft at Smokey Bones BBQ and Sports Bar in Merrillville. The Steelheads made eight selections in the six round draft, and selected Jared Reiner from the University of Iowa with their first selection.
Reiner is a 6-11 center from the University of Iowa was selected first by the Steelheads, joining Dane Fife, Ryan Blackwell, and Willie Chandler as first round draft picks by the Steelheads.
"Jared is a player who has a huge upside and we feel can contribute this season," said Steelheads Head Coach Duane Ticknor. "You can't go wrong selecting a center who is a proven player. Jared will be in the Chicago Bulls Veterans Camp, but in the event that he does not make the team we feel that he will be here in Gary and ready to make a positive contribution."
The Steelheads next selected Aaron Harper, a 6-7 Guard from Ole Miss. In the third round, Marcus Douthit, a 6-11 center from Providence and a 2nd round selection in the NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, and Matt Lottich, a 6-4 guard from Stanford. Torrian Jones, a 6-4 guard from Notre Dame was the selection in the fourth round and Darius Rice, a 6-10 forward from Miami, was chosen in the fifth round. Marvin Black, a 6-7 forward from Marshall, and John Edward, a 7-0 center from Kent State, rounded out the picks for the Steelheads in the sixth and final round.
"We feel that each of our picks serve a purpose for us. We targeted big men and shooters and I know we got what we wanted. Jared, Marcus, Darius, and John each have their own talents that they bring to the table. They are all hard workers and get things done underneath the basket. Aaron, Matt, Torrian, and Marvin all shoot the ball extremely well and should be able to expand the defenses that we will see all season long. Again I am very happy with this draft and can't wait to get started," said Ticknor.
