Boise Hawks News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - Yasiel Balaguert hit a two-out, three-run home run in the eighth inning, lifting the Boise Hawks to a 4-1 victory over the Spokane Indians, before 4,628 fans at Avista Stadium.
Kevin Encarnacion started the eighth with a two out single, followed by a Jacob Rogers walk. On a 3-0 pitch, Balaguert clobbered a fastball over the left field wall to give Boise the lead.
The Hawks bullpen closed the door, as Carlos Martinez tossed three innings of shutout ball, and Mike Hamann worked around a ninth inning single to pick up his second save.
Spokane took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Boise error, but the Hawks evened the score in the sixth on a long leadoff home run by Encarnacion.
Starter Paul Blackburn went five innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits, walking one, and striking out four. Martinez got the win, allowing just one walk and fanning three. Encarnacion went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Hawks.
Indians starter Yohander Mendez went four and two-thirds innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five in a no-decision.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow night - with Loiger Padron meeting Collin Wiles in Game 1 and Duane Underwood meeting David Leadbetter in Game 2. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 6:35 p.m. (MDT).
