Boise Loses to Canadians

BOISE, Idaho - A four-run fourth inning proved to be the difference, as the Vancouver Canadians opened the second half of the Northwest League season with a 5-3 victory over the Boise Hawks, before 3,416 fans at Memorial Stadium.

Trailing 2-0, Mitch Levier led off the decisive frame with a double off starter Eduardo Figueroa, followed by an RBI single from Doug Landaeta. Tony Thompson singled to put runners on the corners, with Landaeta scoring the tying run. Sacrifice flies from Ryan Lipkin and Nino Leyja capped the frame.

Nathan Long tossed five innings, allowing two runs on six hits to pick up his league-leading fifth win. Michael Hart worked around two ninth inning singles to notch his sixth save.

Boise got on the board in the third, getting a two-out RBI double from Pierre LePage and an RBI single from Jesus Morelli - but struggled all night with men in scoring position, going 2-for-14.

Alvaro Ramirez and Morelli each had three hits in the loss for the Hawks, with Richard Jones having his hitting streak snapped at 14 games with a 0-for-5 night. Andres Quezada tossed two scoreless innings - extending his scoreless inning streak to 16 (dating back to July 4).

Thompson went 3-for-4, including his third home run of the season, in the win for the C's.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night, with Dustin Fitzgerald getting the start for the Hawks opposite Matt Thomson at 7:15 p.m.

NOTES - The crowd tonight marked the fourth-straight home crowd in Boise over 3,000 fans...Ryan Cuneo and Dustin Harrington made their Boise debuts tonight after being promoted from the AZL-Cubs - each recording a double...Jordan Latham returned to Boise (where he pitched in 2007), tossing a scoreless eighth)...the loss was the sixth in a row for the Hawks.
