Yakima Bears News Release
KEIZER, Ore. - For the first time all season the Yakima Bears (0-1, 18-21) were defeated when leading after seven innings as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (1-0, 18-21) came back to win 6-4 in front of 2,632 fans at Volcanoes Stadium in the second-half opener Wednesday night.
Following a pair of bloop singles, Eury De La Rosa hit Jose Medina to load the bases for the Volcanoes in the bottom of the eighth. Then Carter Jurica stepped in and stroked a two-run single to left to give Salem-Keizer its first lead of the night at 4-3.
The very next batter, Devin Harris, produced a two-run double off Bears pitcher Kable Hogben to extend the Volcanoes lead to 6-3.
Yakima was able to muster a run in the top of the ninth on a Mike Freeman RBI double but wouldn't get any closer.
Jake Dunning (1-0) pitched three innings in relief, allowing a run on three hits while striking out three and walking zero to earn the victory. De La Rosa (0-1), who had allowed just one run in 25 innings in 2010, gave up four in 2/3 of an inning to take the loss.
Raywilly Gomez belted his third home run of the season - a line drive out to right center - in the second inning to open the game's scoring. Gomez finished the night 2-for-4.
Freeman and Raoul Torrez each posted three-hit nights in a losing effort for the Bears.
Volcanoes center fielder Chris Lofton made a diving catch with two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth inning to rob Freeman of an extra-base hit and preserve the two-run Salem-Keizer deficit.
The Bears now fall to 12-1 on the season when leading after seven innings.
Yakima and Salem-Keizer will be back at it for game two of the five-game series at 6:35 Thursday night. Miles Reagan (1-4, 6.11 ERA) is expected to get the start for the Bears against Kevin Couture (3-2, 3.49 ERA) for the Volcanoes.
