Bluefish Hold Off Patriots 8-7

Bridgewater, NJ - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-7 at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.

The Patriots took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after center fielder Wayne Lydon singled and came around to score on a throwing error during a fly out by third baseman Jeff Nettles.

Somerset scored in the bottom of the second inning on a solo homerun by right fielder Michael Hernandez (14) for the 2-0 advantage.

Bridgeport got on the board in the top of the fourth inning after first baseman Josh Phelps (10) hit a solo homerun to left field to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Bluefish scored to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Designated hitter Joe Jiannetti started it off with a double and right fielder Danny Putnam (11) followed with a homerun to right field to give Bridgeport a 3-2 lead.

The Patriots evened the score up at three in the bottom of the fifth inning after shortstop Iggy Suarez walked and scored on a fielder's choice by Lydon.

Bridgeport regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning on a solo homerun by third baseman Luis Lopez (8) to make the score 4-3.

Somerset answered back with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning after designated hitter Josh Pressley doubled and Hernandez followed with an RBI double to drive him home and make the score 4-4.

The Patriots scored in the bottom of the seventh inning after catcher Jason Belcher walked and scored on a single by first baseman Joe Burke to put Somerset on top 5-4.

The Bluefish rallied to regain the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Shortstop Brandon Chaves walked, Phelps singled, Lopez walked, and Chaves came around to score on a wild pitch. Jiannetti (13) followed with a three-run homerun to left field capping a four run rally to make the score 8-5.

Somerset cut the lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning after Hernandez doubled and second baseman Matt Hagen (9) hit a two-run homerun to center field.

Bluefish reliever Matt Smith (10-11) got the win after allowing two runs on three hits in two innings pitched. Patriots reliever Andrew Dobies (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on a hit in 0.2 innings pitched. Jorge Julio picked up 29th save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Somerset Patriots 2010 Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Saturday night with a 7:05 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The game includes a Post Game Fireworks Show courtesy of Falcon Safety Products. The game is also Irish Night and Pop Warner Night.
