LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The BlueClaws offense was quiet once again on a chilly and wet Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park, as Lake County captured a 5-1 victory to close out the first series of the 2008 season.
Ryan Miller (1-0) limited the BlueClaws (1-3) to one unearned run in five innings, as for the fourth straight game, the home side could get little going early at the plate. Lakewood's only run of the game came without a hit when D'Arby Myers scored Matt Rizzotti after a walk and a throwing error on Miller.
The Captains (3-1) got to BlueClaws starter Jacob Diekman (0-1) quickly, scoring all five runs, four earned, in the first four innings. Diekman, like Julian Sampson the day before, struggled to consistently find the strike zone, walking five in 3 1/3 innings on the mound.
The top of the Captains order did most of the damage, as Mark Thompson, Karexon Sanchez and Matt Brown each drove in a run and Roman Pena brought in a pair.
Both bullpens performed admirably, keeping the final five innings scoreless. Moises Melendez, Chance Chapman and Jared Simon threw for the BlueClaws in relief, while Mike Pontius and Dallas Cawiezell each threw two one-hit innings for the Captains.
Weather was a factor throughout, as the game was delayed 1:15 due to rain. There was a fierce wind blowing straight in from centerfield and the temperature stayed in the low 40s for the duration of the contest.
The BlueClaws have an off day on Monday before returning to FirstEnergy Park on Tuesday for a three-game series with the Hagerstown Suns. First pitch for all three games is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
